Dad’s House, 2024
Dad’s House grew from observing my father’s work as a carpenter in historic buildings, where he repairs, alters and preserves existing structures. This led me to experiment with frame-making: two paintings from the series are framed using offcuts from a solid wood door. The selected pieces retain evidence of the door’s original joinery, drawing attention to the craftsmanship embedded within an everyday object.
The tiny paintings illustrate a small piece of a text based on a dream. They are framed using a model of a traditional door. Framing the paintings through a doorway touches on this notion of the compartmentalisation of aspects of the self. They are placed to make you notice the seams of the room and the details in it that you don’t always recognise, reconnecting the viewer with the craftsman who built the room.
Untitled Ceramics, 2023 – Now
My ceramic work is inspired by medieval and seventeenth-century English pottery and Delftware. I am interested in how functional objects can carry stories across generations. I’ve used ceramics as an extension of my writing practice, immortalising poems I’ve written onto tiles and plates, using traditional methods including slip trailing, inlay and casting.
