The Golden Thread Project – Illustrations for the Cruel Mother

Part of a book published in 2018 – for sale here

‘the cruel mother

a lonely lady of a somewhat noble background has a secret sexual relationship with a gallivanting lord, bears three bonny yet illegitimate bairns, and in her guilt and shame she cuts their throats and buries their bodies in the woods.

i was drawn to this tale purely for how sad and wretched it was. the unaccountability of the men in tale, versus the suffering the mother character takes even beyond the grave and into hell.

there is a lot to learn from tales like this – i think particularly the abstract concept of guilt versus shame. in this tale it shows us a lot about the social position of women, especially of its time.

it seems no matter how lonely and afraid you are, you’re still going to keep the company of demons in hell if you go against the social requirements of your class and gender.

as a modern woman listening to and reading this song, i think about how shame is relative to the company around you, and to the society around you. to me, this song is saying that had she risked the reputation of her father by having children out of wedlock, the shame inflicted on her by the people around her would have never amassed the same suffering as what she endured by holding the heavy guilt of her secret.’

What do I want to tell the world? – Zine making workshop

For this workshop, children/young people/students and adults are encouraged to make a zine about something important to them. This could be about their lives, their favourite things, a historical event. They were encouraged to discuss with each other their identities, what makes them who they are, and celebrate it through the form of zine-making and self publishing.

Collabo Comix workshop (supported by Tommy Brentnall)

For this workshop, students were asked to think about how comics and stories are constructed, rather than how they are drawn.

To encourage this, rather than draw their characters the students made paper puppets using magazines and scrap paper, with push pins so their arms and legs could be moved in different positions.

Then, working in groups they collaborated on a storyline. They created different backgrounds for their puppets to interact with, and used a scanner to document each scene of the story.

ART&Mind zine workshop @ Goldsmiths (with Tommy Brentnall)

For this workshop, students and young people were encouraged to do different drawing exercises, and learned how to make a basic folded zine. This was then followed by a group discussion on mental health, and how a creative practice can be utilised as a tool in this context.
